Abstract

Sixty local does with initial weight of 192.4 kg were mated with 3 local bucks. From mating to 6 weeks before kidding the does were fed grass only while at 6 weeks before and after kidding they were fed either native grass only A 50 grass 50 tree legume mix B or 100 tree legume mix C. The tree legume mix consisted of S. grandiflora L.leucochepala and G. sepium at equal proportions. The results showed that feeding tree legumes did not improve birth weight but dramatically reduced kid mortality from 35 in A to 14 and 0 in B and C respectively and significantly improved kid growth rate. The mean growth rates g/d were 514.7 single and 927.9 twins for C. Due to higher weaning weight kids from treatment C had higher body weight at 32 weeks old but there was no significant effect of diet A or B on growth rate of the kids after weaning.
