Abstract

Aflatoxins are potent hepatotoxins carcinogens mutagens and teratogens. They are produced as fungal secondary metabolites mainly by two species of Aspergillus - A. flavus and A. parasiticus and they can be found in different animal feeds. Very few surveys have been carried out in Bosnia and Herzegovina to determine aflatoxins in animal feed and feed components of domestic and imported origin during years 2002 and 2003 by using commercial competitive ELISA. We found that only one sample 0.53 had aflatoxins that exceed the maximum limits for aflatoxin 4 ug/kg or 40.5 ppb EU MRL for total aflatoxins.
