Abstract

The authors used computer-aided design CAD technology to simulate the mat formation process of oriented strand board OSB. A three-dimensional solid model was developed to simulate behaviours of individual strands in the mat-forming process. Compared witg prior models this model provided a more realistics descriptions of the mat structure. The simulations technology was also more flexible than the previous simulations in suing varied strand geometry and different types of strands orientation defining strand location and solving the problem of edge effect. Key processing parameters including strand geometry and nominal board density were investigated for their relationships to the void volume ratio of the mat. The simulation results showed similar trends to the experimental data under the same processing conditions. This model can also be used to calculate the horizontal density distribution of OSB panels.
