Abstract

The principal setback in hydroponics is the high initial cost of capital and energy inputs relative to the conventional open field cultivation. The successful application of hydroponics is only limited to high value crops to specific regions and sometimes often to a specific time of the year when open cultivation of crops cannot be practiced due to the climatic limitation. There are many potential and advantegeous of hydroponics that can be elaborated. These potentials can only materialize with proper and organised production - market chain to be introduced in the nation agriculture system. Technological constraints is minimal since research was able to develop cost-effective package technology adapted to local environment based on concept adopted globally. Hydroponic technology is often exploited to solve immediate problem during the present economic downturn. This paper discussed potential and constraint of hydroponics vegetable production in Malaysia.
