Melor R., . (2003) Varietal improvement of solanaceous vegetables: current achievements constraints and strategies. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Solanaceous vegetables chilli tomato and eggplant are identified as economically most important and are most popular vegetables grown in this country. The production of vegetables in this country is limited by the lack of superior varieties. This is further aggravated by the unreliable availability of quality seeds. All the local vegetable varieties are of the open-pollinated type and in most cases they are genetically heterogeneous giving inconsistent and unstable performance. Consequently some of the local growers resort to growing imported hybrid seeds which is expensive. The absence of resistant has prompted work in varietal development of vegetables. To date some 16 new varieties of Solanaceous fruit vegetables were developed for local condition. All these varieties are available to the growers. The hybrids of the exotic origins on the other hand have to be purchased from the original source. To ensure genetic purity these superior varieties need to be properly maintained so that the genetic component is table and not contaminated especially during seed multiplication. Extra precaution is essential to ensure no contamination of spray pollens deteriorating the purity of the variety particularly in the case of chilli Capsicum spp where natural occurrence of out-crossing is high. It is also of utmost importance that no seed is to be collected from diseases plants or stressed plants as quality seeds can only come from disease free and superior source. This paper outlines the archivements in varietal development the constraints and strategics in maintaining the stability and purity of Solanaceous crops.
