Abstract
A fluorescently labelled UF resin has been used at an MDF production facility to characterise the effects of MDF blowline processing conditions on resin distribution coverage and relationship to panel properties at mill-scale. Evaluating common process parameters found the introduction of additional steam into the blowline led to greater resin coverage while lower resin nozzle pressures or a lower production rate led to relatively poorer resin distributions. This was due to greater opportunities for resin smearing on fibre through increased blowline turbulence and potential of greater fibre-fibre contacts. Correlation with panel properties revealed a relationship between panel internal bond strength and coverage. However panel cold water soak properties were not related to resin distribution.
