Febrianto Fauzi, . and Hakim Luthfi, . (2006) Physical and mechanical properties of composite board made from banana fiber Musa sp pretreated with alkali. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
The objective of this research is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of composite board made from banana fibers Musa sp. The fibers were pretreated with several concentration of sodium hydroxide solution NaOH ranging from 015 prior to be mixed with adhesive. Phenol formaldehyde PF resin was use as the adhesive with the concentration of 7 based on oven-dried fibers. The target density of board was 0.8g/cm3. The pressure temperature and time of pressing were 25kg/cm2 150 omnicron C for 15 min. respectively. The physical density water absorption and thickness swelling and mechanical modulus of rupture MOR modulus of elasticity MOE internal bond B and screw holding power properties of boards were affected by alkali concentration. The best board obtained was the board prepared from pretreated banana fibers with 15 sodium hydroxide concentration. All the parameters measured fulfilled the JIS A 5905-2003 standard of fiberboard.
