Abstract
New unsaturated polyesters containing methylene spacers were prepared from terephthaloyl chloride with variety of diols based on fumaric acid. Two types of diols used were ethylene glycol and 1 6-hexanidiol. The resulting polymers were first confirmed by H-NMR FTIR and elemental analyses CHN then characterized by thermogravimetric analysis TGA and differential scanning calorimetry DSC. Thermogravimetric analysis TGA of the polymers revealed decrease in decomposition temperature range with the decrease in length of the aliphatic spacer in the main chain of the polymer. The new unsaturated polyesters used as matrix for oil palm empty fruit bunches EFB reinforced composites. Composites were prepared by using different types of unsaturated polyesters resin. Types A was new unsaturated polyesters based on ethylene glycol while type B based on 1 6-hexanediol and types C was conventional unsaturated polyester resin which have viscosity 450-600 cps and specific gravity 1.12. Tensile flexural impact tests and water absorption of the reinforced composites were studied. From the results composites types A showed the highest mechanical properties compared to composites types B and C.
