Abstract

The liquefaction of kenaf core KC powder in the presence of polyethylene glycol PEG 1000 using sulfuric acid as a catalyst was investigated. The aim of this study were to determine the optimum reaction temperature and time to produce polyol from liquefied KC and to investigate the liquefaction efficiencies in the mixing solvent of PEG 1000 and glycerol. The method of this study was modified from a combined methods used by Yaoguang Yao and Kurimoto Y et all. The procedure used in the study was relatively simple however the preparation time was slightly long i.e 3 days to ensure acceptable yield of liquefied kenaf core. It was found that the percentage residue of KC decreasewith an increase of liquefaction temperature and time. Longer reaction time was found to reduce the amount of residue. Nonetheless when liquefaction reaction was maintained for 120 minutes the amount of residue increased quite significantly. Liquefaction efficiency however was not much improved. In the mixing solvents investigation the percent residue of unliquefied KC was relatively lower when the glycerol:PEG ratio was increased from 1:17: to 1:15 suggesting a more comprehnsive liquefaction of KC has taken place. At glycerol:PEG ratio of 5:13 however the amount of residue was slightly increased.
