Abstract
The essential oils extracted from leaves of Japanese cypress Chamaecyparis obtusehave been used for various applications including in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. The oils also have an ability to absorb smells and thus commonly being used for the improvement of indoor air quality. Particleboard PB one of wood-based building materials emits formaldhyde gas in service. This study attempted to abate formaldehyde emission of PB that has been supplemented with cypress leaves before and after the extraction of the essential oil. Different amounts of the leaves were mixed with wood particles to produce PB and other influences on formaldehyde emission were investigated. Formaldehyde emission decreased with increasing amount of leaves in PB preparation. Physical and mechanical properties such as modulus of rupture MOR modulus of elasticity MOE and internal bond IB strength did not show large differences. The results of the study showed that it was possible to manufacture PB with lower formaldehyde emission and giving off good smell.
