Abstract

This paper attempts to study the impact of trade liberalization and globalization under the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement AFTA on the Malaysian rubber industry. the result indicates that implementation of AFTA has indeed improved total trade of Malaysian rubber and rubber products with ASEAN member countries. However trade performance does not favour Malaysia as total imports of rubber products has expanded at a faster pace than exports that resulted in gradual contraction of trade balance between Malaysia and ASEAN member countries. Unfavourable trade growth resulted in Malaysia experiencing trade deficit in 2002.
