Abstract

Mangosteen is classified by Verheij 1986 as a poly-axial species with synchronous rhythmic growth and terminal bearer. At the onset of wet season the quiescent shoots produce new flushes. The number of flushes per year varies with the maturity of the plant ranging from 1-2 flushes in bearing trees to up 6 flushes in young tree Yaacob and Tindall 1995. Apparently flowering is preceded by vegetative flush Verheij 1991 and borne on the young tips of the young branches Yaacob and Tindall 1995. However information on the sequence of flowering and leaf flushes on bearing trees are lacking. This paper reports on the study on the development of quiescent shoot of mangosteen bearing tree.
