Abstract

Golden Hope Plantations Berhad had initiated its breeding programme in 1921 and has produced rubber clones from PB 200 series until presently PB 400 series. The breeding programme was started with the selection of 618 primary clone selected from few hundred thousand seedlings which were commercially planted on estates. Earlier emphasis was to produce clones with high latex yield and good secondary characteristics and later the addition of good latex quality such as latex colour. Last two decades saw the emphasis was to produce good timber clones together with other traits mentioned earlier. Besides breeding for clones another planting material which is produced is the improved clonal seedlings called PBIG seedlings. These seedlings are are produced from polycross of selected clones planted in isolated gardens e.g. oil plam fields. Being robust planting materials the clonal seedlings are recommended for planting on marginal areas such as streep terrain. Currently these seddlings are produced from four gardens called Gough Garden GG6-GG9. This paper will highlight the performance of some promising PB400 series clones in terms of latex yield growth vigour and timber volume. Similar evaluation also goes to the improved clonal seedlings.
