Abstract
The use of winged bean seed meal and whole winged bean meal as possible replacements for fish meal in red tilapia fingerlings were studied over an 8 week period. Eight experimental diets with 40 percent 50 percent 70 percent and 100 percent fish meal replaced with either winged bean seed meal or whole winged bean were prepared. A ninth diet which contained only fish meal as the protein source was the control. Best growth performance was obtained for fry maintained on the control diet. Among the diets containing no winged bean or winged bean seed meal the highest relative growth rate was obtained when 40 percent and 50 percent of fish meal was replaced with winged bean seed meal and winged bean meal respectively. Feed conversion ratios were at 40 percent replacement with winged bean seed meal and 70 percent with whole winged bean meal. A similar trend was observed for protein efficiency ratios. Diets containing no fish meal showed the poorest growth performance. Winged bean seed meal resulted in more stable diets compared with those containing either whole winged bean or fish meal only. Survival was best when 50 percent of fish meal was replaced with winged bean seed meal but this was not significantly different from the other test diets (P0.05)
