Abstract
Concentrations of selected trace elements namely Ag As Au Ba Br Cd Ce Co Cr Cs Eu Fe Hf Hg I La Mo Na Ni Rb Sb Sc Se Sm Sr Ta Tb Th U Yb and Zn in the spices curry powder turmeric powder and chilli powder used in Sri Lanka were determined by the multielement approach of instrumental neutron activation analysis. Compared to the NIST:SRM 1572 citrus leaves Cr Fe Mo Ni Se Th U and the rare earth elements Ce Eu La Sm Tb and Yb were found to be highly enriched in the curry powder. The concentrations of Ba Cd Ce Cs La Rb and Zn were highest in the tumeric powder. Exceptionally high levels of Co (2.66 micro/gram) were found in the chilli powder. Long-term and frequent dietary intake of these spices contaminated with such high levels of toxic elements could result in serious health problems due to progressive accumulation in the human body
