Abstract
FFB yield in oil palm is environmentally influenced by rainfall sunshine topography and soil type. The FELDA Sahabat Complex shows fairly good rainfall distribution except for areas bordering the Sulu Sea. These latter areas near the coast experience about four months of continous dry weather from January/February to April each year. The result is that it causes more male flowers to be formed and thus lower oil palm yields. With the exception of these areas and also those with heavily-deposited coral and sandy soils the oil palms yield potential is generally high for most other soil types in the Sahabat complex. For Umas and Kalabakan the rainfall is more uniformly distributed compared to Sahabat. Dry seasons extending more than two months are absent in Umas and Kalabakan. This condition favours high yields in these complexes. However high yields are limited by shallow soils in the Umas Complex and hilly topography in Kalabakan.
