Abstract

Field observations were conducted on Toona sinensis T. sureni and Chukrasia tabularis between 1992 and 1995 to determine the phenology of market trees at several localities in Peninsular Malaysia. During this period T. sureni and C. tabularis showed similarity in phenological behaviour at all study sites. On the other hand T. sinensis showed a different phenological behaviour within or between sites. The three meliaceous species studied are deciduous during the dry months and exhibit pink leaf flushes at the onset of the following wet season. T. sinensis is completely deciduous unlike T. sureni and C. tabularis which are only partially so. The peak flowering months are February and June for T. sinensis and March and July for T. sureni and C. tabularis. There are subsequently two fruiting seasons peaking in May and September for all three species. Toona and Chukrasia species produce dry dehiscent fruits which split longitudinally when ripe to release small light and winged seeds. The flowering to fruiting period for T. sinensis is 16 weeks T. Sureni 12 weeks and C. tabularis 15 weeks.
