Abstract

Mortality caused by acute exposure to Phorate an organophosphate pesticide and Fenvalerate a synthetic pyrethroid was studied on the snail Lymnaea acuminata Lamarck. These pesticides were found to be highly toxic to the snail at relatively low doses and their toxicities were both dose and time dependent. Snails exposed to a 1:9 mixture of Fenvalerate and Phorate showed high mortality demonstrating that the two pesticides acted synergistically. It is proposed that Phorate an inhibitor of esterases prevents the hydrolysis of Fenvalerate allowing it to accumulate at the active site. A binary mixture of pyrethroids and organophosphates can thus be used for snail control.
