Abstract

Robust plastic pot trays are suitable substitutes for polybags in raising oil palm seedlings in the pre-nursery. Pot trays can be recycled take less soil and the seedlings are easy to handle and maintain. Pot trays allow pre-nursery seedlings to be raised away from a new estate. Seedlings are ready for transfer to large polybags in three months (three-leaf stage) with one worker transferring 1 000 plants per day. The performance of the pot tray seedlings after field planting is a good as those raised in pre-nursery polybags.
