Abstract

The total lipid content and fatty acid composition of 10 species (3 fresh water and 7 marine water) commonly consumed in India were determined. The total lipid content was generally low the maximum bring 1.82. All the fish showed a preponderance of unsaturated fatty acids particularly those with 4 5 and 6 double bonds. In the marine species the two physiologically important n-3(C-205) and docosahaexaenoic acid (C-226) made up to 80 of the total PUFA. Comparatively the fresh water fishes varieties contained less total PUFA as well as n-3 PUFA which was reflected in a higher n6/n3 ration in these fish species. Black pomfret and surmai (both marine water) were potent dietary sources of the n-3 fatty acids C-205 and C-226 which are known to prevent symptoms of cardiovascular disease
