Abstract

The gradual declining trends in oil extraction rate (OER) and kernel extraction rate (KER) in sabah is of great concern to the oil palm industry. Data on OER and KER collected from the 21 mills for the period January 1993 to July 1997 showed that both biological and management factors are likely to influence the observed OER and KER trends. Biological factors which were significant include climatic influence on the physiology of palms age of palms and pollination. The Management factors centered on manpower constraints caused by the rapid expansion of the oil palm industry in Sabah. This had affected supervision and implementation of harvesting and processing efficiency. The paper suggest carrying out more detailed studies on bunches and fruit set in relation to climatic effects. Due attention shouls be given to ensure more orderly development of the oil palm industry where the availability of milling facilities in a locality and the supply of trained manpower are properly planned.
