Review of ortet selection in oil palm

Abstract

The principles and procedures of plant selection as applied in selecting oil palms for cloning are reviewed. It is argued that selection of ortets i.e. parent palms for cloning from trials by combined family and individual selection would be more efficient than mass selection from commercial fields. The most important selection criteria emphasised are still high oil yield and low palm height. Other suggested traits e.g. speciality oils disease resistance will only assume importance when clonal materials having such desirable traits can be produced in large enough numbers to make an economic impact. Owing to the inefficiences of ortet selection and cloning resulting in the inability to obtain many superior clones which can be reproduced in large numbers with negligible mantling abnormality the importance of good breeding programmes to produce superior families to serve as ortet resource cannot be overemphasised.
