Critical operational challanges for maximising oil extractions in oil palm

Abstract

This paper reviews the factors affecting oil in the bunch and realised oil extraction rates in the mills. Oil in the bunch is influenced by environmental biological and agronomic factors. A better understanding of these factors helps to explain oil extraction trends. Realised mill oil extraction rates are affected by the above factors as well as management practices and milling efficiencies. The estimated losses in the field average about 1.66 percent (OER and KER) and unavoidable losses in the mill about 1.89 percent (OER and KER). Minimising wastages in these areas are the main operational challenges faced by the oil palm industry for maximising oil production in oil palms.
