Abstract

The potential problems posed by rats and rhinoceros beetles in oil palm replanting have been underestimated in the past. These pests can significantly build up their populations if the right control strategies are not practised. Recent findings showed that two baits per palm in a replanting environment is more effective than one bait per palm in view of the high rat population that has built up over the years without baiting prior to replanting. Baiting must also be extended to the settlers' underplanted lots as well to augment baiting efforts in the replanted areas. The large number of beetle adults and larvae have rendered control using Furadan and pheromone ineffective. An effective strategy for the control of this pest is to reduce the breeding sites namely the decomposing standing palms. The use of Metarhizium is being considered.
