Abstract

The potential economic viability of rearing cattle in a 1 000 ha oil palm plantation was calculated to be good; a return period of a minimum of three years is anticipated. In addition to additional returns from cattle there is income diversification (returns from oil palm cattle). A small saving in labour (4 workers over 1 000 ha) is also expected. Work by others have shown that rearing of cattle can lead to higher yield of FFB; but we assume in the evaluation a no-change situation.
