Abstract
The forests of Peninsular Malaysia have contributed significantly towards the socio-economic and industrial development of the country through the generation of income from the exports of timber produce and creation of employment in the wood based industries. In intangible terms the forest are important in maintaining environmental stability protection of flora and fauna biodiversity and water resources. In order to continue producing such services the Forest Department Peninsular Malaysia has embarked on a series of 10-yearly interval National Forest Inventories begining in 1970s to collect timely statistically sound and cost effective forestry data for purposes of developing sound forest management plans for sustainable management. This paper highlights and discusses various issues associated with these National Forest Inventories as well as on their implications and to make management decisions with regard to resource flows and for forecasting projected changes.
