Abstract

Forest plantations of fast-growing exotic Acacia trees in Malaysia are described. The importance and constraints with their establishment are outlined. The pest insects found on these Acacia plantations are identified and their importance ranked. The most serious pest on Acacia mangium being the termite Coptotermes curvignathus which nests underground and tunnels into the heartwood via the tap-root. Other important pests include another termite Microcerotermes dubius which nests on tree trunk at times killing the tree and Xylosandrus crassiusculus the pin-hole ambrosia beetle which attacks the Acacia hybrid (A. mangium x A. auriculiformis) as well as A. Mangium in Sabah particularly freshly felled trees. Another pin-hole borer Platypus pseudocupulatus is a serious pest on A. crassicarpa with infestation reaching 70 per cent in Sabah. Control methods for the insect pests of Acacia are also discussed. Major disease are also briefly considered.
