Abstract

With most of the World's population becoming concentrated in cities individuals are isolated from the prodcution of food. Rural areas are thought of in terms of recreation rather than agriculture and Government policies for them are strongly influenced by town-based pressure groups. We are bullied by environmentalists and harassed by conservationists. 'Organic' foods 'sustainable' agriculture and even agroforestry are concepts alien to the fundamental aim of ensuring adequate supplies of food and raw materials for our rapidly expanding population. City dwellers have always been against the general idea of plantaion agriculture and much of our time has been spent in trying to counter biased criticism. This problem will become even more serious in the future and the plantation industry must be prepared to employ public relations specialists to create favourable opinions ensuring that the public is on our side long before new problems arise.
