Abstract

Pheromones are semicochemicals produced and received by members of the same species which influence a range of behaviours and biological processes in insects. The most common types of pheromones used in crop protection are sex pheromones and aggregrate pheromones. An observation was carried out on aggregation pheromones traps for rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) set up in a trial plot in PPPTR. The super parabolic vane traps proved to be effective in trapping large numbers of adult beetles. The pheromone sachets were found to have a life span of 60-80 days and equal number of both sexes of the beetles were captured. Use of pheromone traps were insufficient to control severe beetle infestations in the short term and properly monitored application of insecticidewas necessary to protect the palms. The traps were important for long term control when integrated with insecticieds and is an important component of the integrated pest management approach.
