Abstract

Increasing dietary CP commencing with eight percent produced positive N retentions due to a lower urinary nitrogen output (NO) suggesting increased efficiency in the ability to digest dietary N. True N digestibility was 88.5 per cent. The biological value (BV) was 82.6 per cent. Correlation matrices are presented between nitrogen intake (NI) faecal nitrogen output (FNO) UNO apparently digestibility N intake (ADNI) N balance (NB) and dietary N content (DNC). With the exception of the relationship between UNO and DNC all other correlations were statistically significant (P0.01). The endogenous urinary N (EUN) value was 25.3 mg/kg live weight/day and metabolic faecal N (MFN) was 0.357 g/100 g DMI. The digestible crude protein (DCP) requirement for maintenance calculated from the relationship between NB and ADN as well as by the factional method gave a mean value of 1.50 g DCP/W ( 0.75) kg/day
