Abstract
Visual records from the reefs in the study area produced a list of over 265 species of fishes 171 of which can be identified to species. The diversity and abundance of fishes at 8 census points are compared and conclusions are drawn as to the relatiohship of the fish communities to the types of reef which occur. Considerable differences in the composition of the fish fauna between the reefs in the Bodgaya group and at Pulau Sipadan (Sabah) have been observed. The South Point site on the Boheydulong Outer Reef in the Bodgaya group and the West Reef at Pulau Sipadan are the sites which showed the greatest species diversity and numbers of individuals. Comparisons with other sites in the region some of which are marine parks or reserves show that the reef fish fauna of the study area is the richest studies to date in Malaysian waters and is also of regional importance
