The Malaysian rattan industry: strategies for development

Citation

Shukri bin Mohamed, . The Malaysian rattan industry: strategies for development. -.

Abstract

Rattan was the most important non-wood foreign product in Malaysia. However trade in rattan and rattan products represented only 0.1 of the total value of forest products exported by Malaysia from 1980 to 1983. The rattan industry contributed to the economy through the exports of rattan furnitures and semi-processed rattans. Malaysia currently held a small percentage of the world's rattan and rattan products market. Strategies for the development of the rattan industry in this country included further downstream processing import substitution with greater utilization of available rattan species and commercial production of handicrafts and other household items made of rattan. Problems that might impede the growth of the industry were strong competition from established producers and exporters; uncertainty of raw material supply and lack of information for venture assessment and investment analysis of the industry. Aggressive marketing strategy implementation by the industry coupled with research and development efforts by the government agencies concerned would make Malaysia one of the major producers of rattan products in the world
