Abstract

The kraft pulping and papermaking properties of 69 major species from the Sarawak peat swamp forest were evaluated. Although there was a wide variation in properties most species produced good yields of pulp with moderate amounts of cooking chemical. The tearing strength of the pulps was particularly good; however the bonding properties although generally adequate for a range of paper grades were lower than desirable for high strength end products. Almost half of the species showed indications of some pitch deposits during laboratory processing
