Abstract
The timbers of Acacia mangium Gmelina arborea and Paraserianthes falcataria have a wide range of properties which play a significant role in determining their eventual utilization. All the timbers are pale coloured especially in the sapwood and are of light density ranging from 380-480 kg/m3. For pulping and papermaking their chemical composition would not pose any serious problem and their fibre characteristics are favourable. Of several tropical hardwoods recommended for pulping these species are listed among the top. Being light hardwoods the timbers are not marked by good strength properties and would have to be restricted to non-structural usage. The timbers have been classified from durable to non-durable. While Acacia mangium is quite amenable to preservative treatment Gmelina arborea and Paraserianthes falcataria are generally easy to saw and work the timbers are suitable for general-purpose utility furniture and joinery. The timbers can be commercially utilised for plywood manufacture since no problems are encountered in peeling and gluing. Tests have indicated their suitability for particleboard-making especially in the light and medium density range.
