Abstract
The problems with pesticides in the tropics are mainly due to improper and unsafe use. This is linked to various factors of which the major ones are: lack of national pesticide control schemes in particular lack of facilities to implement rules and regulations effectively; inadequately controlled marketing systems and insufficient knowledge regarding the most appropriate pest control technologies. The attitude in the developed world towards pesticides has undergone a major change in recent decennia. And this in turn has considerably affected the use patterns in developing countries. However these countries were not always adequately equipped to safely deal with certain very toxic compounds. Intoxications due to in particular pesticide applications have thus become a major concern. The various concerns about safe and effective use of pesticides led during the course of the year 1981 to initiatives in view of the preparation and adoption of a Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) took the lead. Jointly with other United Nations agencies governmental and non-governmental bodies as well as the pesticide industry a process for the elaboration of such a Code has been established. The Code was unanimously adopted by all member nations during the 23rd session of the FAO Conference in November 1985. Details of the Code will be discussed as well as certain aspects of its implementation and monitoring.
