Abstract

Two year old oil palm (Elaeis quineensis Jaq.) seedlings raised in growth chamber were exposed to 0.03 0.05 0.1 0.3 0.5 1.0 and 1.5 ppm of SO2 concentrations for 1 2 and 3 h respectively. Changes in diffusive resistance indicated that low level of SO2 tends to stimulate stomatal opening which was highly correlated with the rate of transpiration. Increased in concentration and duration of exposure consequently led to further reduction in chlorophyll content enhanced K leakage and leaf injury. Results of the present studies suggest that threshold level of visible injury only occurred when the seedlings were fumigated with 0.3 ppm for at least an hour.
