Abstract
Oil palm estates in Malaysia face serious labour shortage problems and need to develop planting techniques systems equipment and machines to improve the productivity of the workers. While many major planting operations have been successfully mechanised there is still scope to mechanise further on the estates and for increased research and development of priority areas for mechanisation especially harvesting and pruning of very tall palms evacuation of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) and upkeep of leguminous covers. Use of simple adaptations of existing machines and advances in knowledge of the crop and sciences in other disciplines is advocated and discussed. Estates still face numerous constraints and problems in implementing some of the advances in mechanisation due to high costs of machinery access problems reduction in flexibility of work arrangements and union acceptance. Managers need to be innovative in all areas and also take into consideration the agronomic implications of the systems to be implemented to ensure that the growth and yields of the oil palm are not reduced.
