Abstract

The estimated annual average wood production of 21.07 million cubic meters (including rubberwood) is expected to meet its total rated wood processing capacity of 22.12 million cubic meters for the period 1986-2000. However the total wood production in Peninsular Malaysia would not be able to meet its total rated wood processing capacity for the period 1986-2000 while Sabah is projected to have a shortage of 1.5 million cubic meters of roundwood per annum on average for the 1991-1995. Sarawak faces no such apparent shortage over the period 1986-2000. In terms of domestic wood requirements Malaysia would not face any apparent shortage for the period 1986-2000. However Peninsular Malaysia is projected to face and average annual deficit or 0.61 million cubic meters of roundwood if rubberwood production is not taken into account. With the availability of rubberwood Peninsular Malaysia is expected to have an average surplus of 6.17 million cubic meters per annum for the period 1986-1990 and declining to 0.56 million cubic meters per annum during the period 1996-2000. For the states of Sabah and Sarawak the average annual surplus of timber production in terms of their domestic requirements are estimated to be 8.18 million cubic meters and 11.46 million cubic meters respectively for the period 1986-2000.
