Abstract

This paper describes the process of socialization in a Malay peasant society. The writer tries to understand the process by using Whiting-Child approach that the economic political and social organization of a society - the basic customs surrounding the nourishment sheltering and protection of its members - seems to be a likely source of influence on child training practices. Hence it is argued that the development of a submissive and 'moderate' character of the Malay society can be traced to its economic political religious and social organization. The traditional culture is transmitted from generation to generation. Although forces of socio-cultural change tend to modify traditional structure in various ways the agents of socialization in the Malay society act as mediator to these changes. Hence the socialization process continues to perpetuate traditional structure in the Malay peasant society.
