Abstract

In laboratory studies the coccinellid Micraspis crocea (Mulsant) consumed 30 eggs of Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenee in four days while Synharmonia octomaculata (Fabricius) consumed only about 5 eggs. The orthopterans Metioche vittaticollis (Stal.) Anaxipha longipennis Serville and Conocephalus longipennis de Haan consumed 10 eggs of C. medinalis in one day. Conocephalus longipennis consumption of 5th instar Nilaparvata lugens (Stal.) and Nephotettix virescens Distant increased with increasing prey density. In field-cage experiments the density of deadhearts decreased with increasing density of M. vittaticollis per m2. Fifth instars and adults of C. longipennis consumed significantly more Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) egg masses than did early instars of the grasshopper.
