Abstract

An initially dry formulation of artificial diet was described and evaluated for suitability and optimum rearing density for Dacus dorsalis larvae. At 26.5 plus/minus 1.5 degrees C and 72.5 plus/minus 7.5 percent RH the mean survival of larvae through adult was 74.8 percent with 90.0 percent larval and 91.8 percent pupation survival and 90.1 percent adult emergence. The increase in rearing density from 300 to 900 larvae (at most 6 h old) per 50 g diet (25 g dry mixture and 25 ml of 0.15 percent HCl) did not significantly affect the above parameters. However the weight of pupa and the duration of larval and total developmental periods were significantly reduced from 17.0 to 9.7 mg each 9 to 6 and 19.2 to 16.5 days respectively. For breeding purposes a rearing density of 775 larvae per 50 g diet was found optimum.
