Abstract

This article discusses the effect of Act 134 (Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 and revised 1974) on the life of the aborigines (Orang Asli). It is found that the Act had brought about negative impacts particularly in the field of Orang Asli economic development. In the case study in Tapah Perak it was found that most of the Orang Asli communities have stopped practising swidder agriculture but have instead resorted to collective jungle produce to earn their living. This situation if left unchecked will probably undermine the process of integrating them into the wider Malaysian society
