Malaysian forests : a case study in problems of conservation and development

Abstract

Effective action towards forest conservation requires an understanding of land use in relation to development. Current trends in Malaysia and other developing countries parallel those that have occurred in temperate regions and to a large extent reflect the development of these societies as a whole. A three-stage sequence is proposed beginning with low intensity subsistence economies that have only modest impact on forest resources. Hunter/gatherer and traditional shifting cultivation economies fall into this class. At this stage large areas of forest remain passively conserved.
