Abstract
A study on the fouling community in cages culture was undertaken at Kampung Trayong fish farm Sabah. The environmental parameters observed for a period of 5 months indicated that whereas temperature pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) remained relatively constant the water salinity showed a broad range of fluctuation from 23.3-33 percent. A total of 19 species of macrofoulers from the phyla Mollusca Annelida Arthropoda Echinodermata Porifera and Cnidaria were encountered encrusting the platform structures and cages. Glass panels were employed to monitor the settlement rate and succession of the fouling communities. Results obtained from weekly observation on the panels revealed that diatoms (Navicula sp. and Nitzschia sp.) oyster (Pinctada sp.) and barnacles (Balanus sp.) were dominant throughout the 5 months study period. The peak period of diatoms settlement occurred in October; Pinctada sp. in November while Balanus sp. in August and December. However when monthly samples were analysed from the glass panels no distinct successional pattern was observed
