Abstract

Low-speed cutting tests on spikelets and bunch stalk of oil palm were conducted to investigate the effects of design factor blade mode of operation and material properties on specific force and energy requirement per unit cut area. The mechanical properties of spikelet and bunch stalk were significantly affected by knife edge angle oblique angle and shear angle but not by cutting speed. The bunch region and its degree of ripeness showed strong influence on the energy required to cut the stalk. The bottom stalk was tougher than that from middle or upper part and the strength of spikelets from these regions was not significantly different. As a whole the maximum cutting force for the stalk was only about 32 per cent of that for spikelet
