Germanium uptake by the fruiting bodies and mycelium of the fungus Ganoderma lucidum

Abstract

The amount of germanium (Ge) taken up by the fungal mycelium of Ganoderma lucidum in liquid medium incubated at 27 degrees for 20 days increased from 1688 to as much as 7000 mg/kg with 50-400 mg/kg GeO2 incorporated in the medium. However with increasing GeO2 in the medium there was a corresponding decrease in the growth of the mycelium. In the case of sawdust as the growth medium the maximum uptake of Ge by the fruiting bodies was only 800 mg/kg. The various concentrations (17-139 mg/kg) of GeO2 added in the sawdust medium did not seem to have any effect on the normal development of the fruiting bodies. There were advantages in using the fungal mycelium of G. lucidum as a source of organic Ge instead of its fruiting bodies which have been traditionally used
