Abstract
This paper describes the diversity abundance and patterns of distribution of fishes in the aquatic habitats of Temengor lake and rivers Hulu Perak Malaysia. In the streams ichthyofaunal composition is relatively low with the average Shahnon-Weiner diversity index of 1.11. Poropuntius sedleyi locally known as ikan daun dominates the area not only in number but also in weight. Overall the streams support an average of 11.54 g/(m square) and less than one individual for the same area. Sg. Halong and Sg. Emban two streams which are close together have similar species composition. On the other hand Sg. Halong and Sg. Emban share little in common with Sg. Bekek in terms of species composition. In the lake physical and chemical parameters indicate that the water down to a depth of 6 m can support life. The cyprinid fish Hampala macrolepidota is present at a depth of 28 m. Water layers at 6 to 8 m support the most biomass and the highest number of species. Early findings indicate that Malaysian lacustrine fishes can tolerate low oxygen level as long as the water temperature remains reasonably low
