Abstract

The antomical characteristics of 6- to 12-y-old plantation-grown rotan semambu (Calamus scipionum) have been investigated at three height levels. The fibre length fibre diameter and fibre wall thickness decreased with height of stem while the fibre lumen diameter increased with height. No significant trend was found fibre length and fibre wall thickness in the radial direction. The frequency of vascular bundles per square mm and metaxylem vessel diameter increased from the base to the top while the vascular bundle size and percentage of fibre area decreased. Fibre diameter fibre lumen diameter vascular bundle size and metaxylem vessel diameter increased from the periphery to the centre although not very much. The anatomical characteristics of C. scipionum differed significantly with age except for fibre wall thickness. In terms of trends only fibre diameter percentage of fibre area frequency and size of vascular bundle decreased with age.
