Abstract

Ecotourism is becoming increasingly popular especially in a country like Malaysia. Being a maritime nation with long shorelines together with remarkably unspoiled rainforest system, there are ample activities to be offered to domestic as well as foreign tourists. By doing so, ecotourism would be one of the major contributing earning to Malaysia. This article highlights the need to develop inland waterways as an alternative transportation made to promote the water based ecotourism activities. The article will also discuss briefly on the advantages of developing inland waterways system for transportation to tourist. In order to develop inland waterways for the purpose of transportation, some environmental considerations need to be studied at the early stage of planning. Some of the environmental considerations mainly on watercraft operations will be discussed in further detail.
