Abstract
Data from IT field experiments carried out at different locations in the low country tea growing districts were used to study the response curve for N. Four model viz. Quadratic Square root Mitscherlich and Split line were tested on the pooled data. The best fit as judged by R2 was obtained with the quadratic model ie y = a + bx + cx2. This model accounted for 85.4% of the variation in yield over the range 0 - 540 kg N/ha. A simple economic analysis revealed that the present upper limit of N 300 kg/ha is far below the economic optimum. Higher rates of N are therefore warranted for high-yielding vegetatively propagated tea in the low country under the prevailing cost and market situation
